Laguna Niguel Lake
Rippin’ Lips, inc.
Press Release
July 12, 2010
As of July 01 2010, Laguna Niguel Lake is under new management. Rick Mendoza the original owner who started the lake concession in 1994 has teamed up with his friend and business partner Darren Colbert. Mendoza and Colbert have entered into a 15 year lease with the County of Orange.
In the past 11 days the aerator / diffuser system has been fixed and is up and running. Oxygen levels are good in all areas of the lake. After reports of a fish kill 3 years ago due to low oxygen levels we are happy to report that there are still a good number of large catfish being caught. We also have a large population of smaller bluegill and crappie. Although the majority of the Lake’s ‘double digit’ bass are gone there is still a healthy population of younger bass to 3 lbs in size.
The new management will be working hard to get the lake back to the conditions it was in 6 years ago. We plan on clearing a lot of vegetation around the shoreline and sinking some trees for additional structure. The creek inlet will be cleared and fishing conditions will improve. We have made arrangements for Dennis to transport his “hook Jaw’ rainbow trout in from Utah this November. Many fishing derbies and youth fishing clinics are planned for trout season. We will start monthly stockings of catfish next year.
All the rental boats have been power washed along with the boat dock and the surrounding area. The concession building has been cleaned and fully stocked with bait and tackle, food and beverage, bags of ice and ice cream. Fresh baked (daily) goods such as assorted cookies and rice krispie treats are also available for our fishermen and park patrons.
Our new hours of operation are 6am to 8pm Saturday and Sunday and 7am to 6pm Monday through Friday. Our rates have been dramatically reduced for the summer. Fishing permits are only $10 per day for ALL ages. Boat rentals are $10hr or $25 all day.
