Troy

Troy

This last Wednesday a good friend gave me a call around 5pm When the phone rang I could see it was Greg Greg owns a 78 foot Elliot Named ALURE out of Newport Beach CaliforniaAlure (16) Greg had word of Bluefin Tuna boils and was ready to chase these elusive Tuna What happened after this call was awesome I drove to Greg’s house where I met up with long time friend Wayne. Wayne is quite the outdoors man having hunted and fished around the world. While I admit I am not the most proficient fisherman I was up to this crazy trip. What I didn’t know I was about to be schooled by these two crazy fishermen.

The Captain of Greg’s Boat, “Capt Jeff”, and Good Friend, Troy, had the Alure in San Diego around 7pm Wednesday night. We loaded up at Parson’s Landing and took on 5 scoops of bait. We were headed some 160 miles south of Point Loma. After watching the news on the 6’ flat screen TV, I was off to my state room for a good night’s sleep. I had no idea where I would be in the morning. When I woke up, the sun was just rising. Troy was at the helm and said he had been there since 1am. I asked where we were and Troy said some 145 south of Point Loma. As we started to smell the coffee around the salon it didn’t take long for Capt Jeff to wake up and get to the stern where he was setting 5 trolling lines. We reduced speed and had breakfast as the sun came up on Thursday morning. Capt Jeff said we still had 20 miles to go. Around 8am, while cruising by Kelp Patties, we heard the screech of the reels and I heard Jeff slow the yacht. 2 of the lines had Yellowtail on, this stop placed 4 Yellowtail on the boat. We kept paddy hopping while still on our way to our final destination.

The next paddies produced Dorado. As we got closer to our destination we hit a boil of Albacore pulling on

some 15 to the deck. The last 20 miles had taken up most of Thursday as we just kept hitting great strikes of fishing. Troy and Wayne whipped up some Yellowtail ceviche and set the bbq up for some fresh Dorado steaks for dinner. Capt Jeff set the sea anchor for the night. After dinner Wayne could never leave well enough alone and started catching squid that were coming up towards the 5 halogen lights under the swim step on the Alure. We had had a great day with a boat plugged with3 different flavors of fish, but we had not found the elusive Bluefin we were looking for.

Sunrise on Friday seemed early. My arms were killing me from Thursday. Troy explained that ibuprofen would help make it through what I was about to experience. After pulling in the sea anchor Capt Jeff said we had drifted about 6 miles. We set the 5 Rods and were off to look for the Blue Fin. Just about the time I got my first cup of coffee the reels took off screaming resulting in 3 bent rods. I grabbed the first rod and started reeling.  I yelled “Color?” and Capt Jeff with gaff in hand yelled “BLUEFIN”. On this first stop of the day we all pulled in 3 tuna before it got quiet.  It was time to reset the trolling rods and finish breakfast. As the morning moved on we hit the Bluefin school 2 more times, each time pulling in 2 or 3 tunas apiece. The cooler on the boat was plugged with Bluefin and the day had been something I had never experienced before. The sea was getting a bit rougher as the hurricane swells from the hurricane that was in the pacific, were catching up to us. Capt Jeff said it was time to go home. We packed it in and headed for home. I thought I had seen everything until Wayne and Troy started to filet the Bluefin. As Wayne was pulling the Bluefin onto the Boat from the sack at the stern, an eyeball rolled out of one of the Bluefin (it looked like a marble to me). Wayne picked it up and popped it in his mouth and said “WOW that’s good”. I thought I was going to be sick. Just another adventure. Memories for life with good friends.
